20th Delhi GM Open 2023 R8: Aravindh is back in the lead

by Shahid Ahmed - 29/03/2023

The reigning three-time National Rapid and Blitz champion, GM Aravindh Chithambaram got himself back in the lead. He defeated GM Marat Dzhumaev when the Uzbek's positional exchange sacrifice did not work out the way he wanted. GM Michal Krasenkow drew with GM Volodar Murzin which means both Volodar and Aravindh are at 7.5/8 each. They will inevitably face each other in the penultimate round. IM Neelash Saha drew with GM Luka Paichadze and the current National Sub-Junior champion, S Aswath held the strong GM Lalit Rohit to a draw. Over a dozen players are trailing the tournament leaders by a half point at 7/8 each. 15 players in pursuit

Commonwealth and Asian Youth Under-12 Gold medalist, 11-year-old Ethan Vaz held IM Viani Antonio Dcunha to a draw. WFM Lasya G and Sarayu Velpula are currently top female performers at 6.5/8 each.

Marat - Aravindh

GM Marat Dzhumaev (UZB, 2428) made a nice positional exchange sacrifice to gain an initiative on the kingside against GM Aravindh Chithambaram (2607).

Position after 18...b5

White went 19.Rxa5 Qxa5 20.hxg5 Qd8 21.Qd2 hxg5 22.Nd4 Bb7 23.Nf5 Re8 24.Nxg7 Re5! That's why Aravindh is such a strong player. Instead of recapturing at g7, he decided to improve his rook's position as he can regain the piece in the next move too. 25.Nh5 Rxd5 26.Bd3 Re5 27.Qf2? Qe7 and White's compensation is no longer there. Black has consolidated his position. Although the king looks quite vulnerable, practically not much can be done about it.

Aswath - Lalit

The reigning 47th National Sub-Junior Open champion, Aswath S (2214) had a substantial advantage against GM Lalit Rohit (2544) in the middlegame. However, it was not easy to convert it into a win. He tried to score a win till the very end, however the strong GM ensured that a half point is the maximum his opponent is going to get.
