Rustum Tolentino dominates Qatar Masters Open B 2023, Shrayan Majumder second
FM Rustum Tolentino (PHI) scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win Qatar Masters Open B 2023. He finished a full point ahead of the field. Shrayan Majumder scored 7.5/9 to finish second. FM Ammar Sedrani (UAE), FM Djabri Massinas (ALG) and Mandar Lad Pradip scored 7/9 each. They shared third place. Rustum scored eight wins in-a-row and he had a full point lead heading into the final round. Shrayan Majumder was the sole player at 7/8. Their final round battle ended in a draw. Rustum became champion and Shrayan second. The total prize fund of Open B (≤2299) was US$ 11750. The top three prizes were $2500, $2000 and $1000 along with a trophy each. Photos: Aditya Sur Roy
Shrayan wins seven games in-a-row
Despite starting the tournament with a loss, Shrayan Majumder won the next seven games in-a-row. He drew the final round game against the eventual champion - FM Rustum Tolentino (PHI) to secure a clear second place.
A total of 89 players including an IM took part from 23 countries across the world in this ten-day nine round Rating tournament for players rated ≤2299. It was organized Qatar Chess Association at Lusail Sports Arena in Doha, Qatar from 11th and 20th October 2023. The time control of the event was 90 minutes + 30 seconds increment per move.
