Kaustuv Kundu triumphs at 2nd Guwahati Smart City Rating Open 2025

IM Kaustuv Kundu, IM Mayank Chakraborty and Alekhya Mukhopadhyay scored an unbeaten 8.5/10 each at 2nd Guwahati Smart City Rating Open 2025. Kaustuv won the tournament due to better tie-break score. Mayank and Alekhya were placed second and third respectively. Kaustuv drew against the top seed and eventual runner-up, Alekhya in the seventh round. The total prize fund was ₹510000. The top three prizes were ₹70000, ₹50000 and ₹30000 along with a trophy each. The five-day ten round Rating Open tournament was organized by All Assam Chess Association at Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in Guwahati, Assam from 4th to 8th August 2025. Kaustuv's fourth rating tournament triumph of the year

The top seed of the tournament, IM Mayank Chakraborty was the sole leader 8/9, heading into the last round. Four players - Tanmay Rajbongshi, IM Kaustuv Kundu, Alekhya Mukhopadhyay and Shankhodip De were trailing by a half point at 7.5/9 each. Soni Krishan lost to Kaustuv who became champion. Shankhodip drew against Mayank and the latter secured second place Tanmay lost to Alekhya and he finished third. Kaustuv went on to win two more rating tournaments in August. We will mention it in detail in separate reports.

Soni Krishan (1902) made a big positional mistake of giving up his dark square bishop 25.Bxd4?? Bxd4-+ 26.gxh5 Kg7 27.Ne2 Rh8! IM Kaustuv Kundu (2386) made a great decision to continue his attack on the h-file and ignore defending the d4-bishop 28.Nxd4 cxd4 Black went on to convert his positional advantage into a win.

IM Kaustuv Kundu scored an unbeaten 8.5/10, won the tournament on tie-breaks and maintained his rating

A total of 291 players including two IMs took part from all over the country and two from Nepal. The five-day ten round Rating Open tournament was organized by All Assam Chess Association at Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in Guwahati, Assam from 4th to 8th August 2025. The time control of the event was 90 minutes + 30 seconds increment per move.
