Indian Oil 51st National Women 2025 R9: Nandhidhaa juggernaut keeps rolling, Shubhi maintains her pursuit

by Shahid Ahmed - 11/12/2025

WGM Nandhidhaa P V (TN) is poised to win Indian Oil 51st National Women's Chess Championship 2025. In a battle of National champion, the reigning and defending Women's champion, Nandhidhaa prevailed over the new Sub-Junior Girls champion, WFM Arshiya Das (TRI). With this win, Nandhidhaa scored a double hat-trick 8.5/9. WFM Shubhi Gupta (UP) maintained her pursuit as her opponent, Shivamshika G (TEL) made a paltry mistake after having a phenomenal run in the last few rounds. WGM Mary Ann Gomes (PSPB) scored a clinical victory over WFM Kheerthi Ganta (TEL). WIM Srishti Pandey (MAH) scored the biggest upset of the round as she defeated the top seed, WIM Arpita Mukherjee (WB). Round 10 starts tomorrow at 10 a.m. IST. Photos: Shahid Ahmed

Srishti Pandey stuns top seed Arpita Mukherjee

Only three games ended in draws out of the top 20 boards. That should certainly give an inkling about the level of competitiveness as the tournament nears the end. Shubhi is the only player trailing the sole leader by a half point at 8/9, followed by WGM Mary Ann Gomes 7.5/9 and WIM Srishti Pandey 7/9. Then nine players are at 6.5/9 each.

WGM Nandhidhaa P V (TN) is in no mood to slow down

Nandhidhaa - Arshiya: 1-0

It was a clash of champion - the reigning and defending National Women's Champion, WGM Nandhidhaa P V (TN, 2257) was up against the newly crowned National Sub-Junior Girls 2025 champion, WFM Arshiya Das (TRI, 2232).

Position after 13...Rb8

Instead of playing 13...Kd8 to escape from the Nc7+ fork threat, Black chose the questionable 13...Rb8? 14.Nxa7 Ra8 15.Nxc8 Rxa1 16.Nxb6 White not only got two minor pieces for a rook but also a pawn 16...Ba3 17.0-0 0-0 18.Bxa3 Rxa3 19.Nc4 and White went on to win the game comfortably.

WGM Nandhidhaa P V (TN) prevailed in the battle of the champions

Shubhi - Shivamshika: 1-0

WFM Shubhi Gupta (UP, 2259) made a short work of the reigning Telangana State Women's 2025 champion, Shivamshika G (1881).

Position after 21...c5??

21...c5?? is a huge mistake. Find out the winning continuation for White which Shubhi executed in the game.

Mary Ann - Kheerthi

Position after 25.d5

WGM Mary Ann Gomes (PSPB, 2243) played a sublime move 25.d5! in an already advantageous position. 25...Nxa3 26.b4 bxc5 27.bxc5 exd5?? 28.Ne7+ Kh7 29.c6 Rc7 30.Nxd5 Rcc8 31.Rc5! Rfd8 32.Ra1 Nc4 33.Rxa7 Nd6 34.Nb6 Kg6 35.c7 Re8 36.Rc6 and White won.

WGM Mary Ann Gomes (PSPB) was too strong for WFM Kheerthi Ganta (TEL)

Srishti - Arpita: 1-0

WIM Srishti Pandey (MAH, 2219) won an extremely complicated game against the top seed, WIM Arpita Mukherjee (WB, 2301).
